Indian Energy Exchange Transforms Privileged Access with Sectona and Enables Efficient Trading for 6000+ Participants

IEX

Industry

Electric Utility

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) is India’s first and largest energy trading exchange established in 2008 with its headquarters in New Delhi. It provides nationwide automated trading platform for physical delivery of electricity, renewable energy certificates, and energy saving certificates. It enables efficient price and counter-party risk management for customers from the electricity market as well as the open access industries. With over 6,500 active registered participants, IEX empowers customers to manage their power portfolios competitively and reliably. IEX is publicly listed on the NSE and BSE.

Challenge

Securing Privileged Access in a Highly Regulated and High-Volume Trading Environment

IEX is approved and regulated by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission. With multiple product portfolios under its umbrella, IEX is driven by a commitment to enable efficient trading execution for its increasing participants.

The IT team of IEX had ensured adoption of start-of-the-art systems and technology to establish transparent and efficient energy marketplaces for delivering affordable and reliable energy to consumers. To uphold this mission, IEX needed a modern and secure approach to administrative user access management that would help them establish security best practices.

The team regularly managed custom trading applications and critical network device applications. Exposing these systems to external risk vectors could have caused severe business disruption. Ensuring that administrative credentials were neither exposed nor shared among multiple IT staff members became paramount.

To address these risks and strengthen access governance, IEX decided to implement a Privileged Access Management (PAM) solution.

After identifying key gaps, the team defined three key objectives:

  • Flexible framework for integrating with their in-house custom applications for securing access and monitoring user activities.
  • Secure vault for providing password-less access to applications and storing credentials in a central encrypted repository.
  • Scalable model to extending the access security and monitoring framework to a wide mix of IT assets, including networking devices.
The Solution

A Scalable and Vault-Driven PAM Framework with End-to-End Visibility

IEX achieved all three objectives with Sectona’s PAM Suite.

Sectona delivered an automated and robust solution that secured privileged access across the entire IT infrastructure, including network devices and custom applications. Its built-in framework enabled IEX to scale and extend its security controls seamlessly to a wide range of in-house and third-party applications as needed.

The solution featured a powerful and embedded vault that remained unexposed and fully encrypted, safeguarding critical credentials while minimising operational risk and downtime. At the same time, Sectona enhanced governance and oversight by delivering comprehensive logs, detailed reports, and actionable threat intelligence for monitoring user activities.

The key objectives achieved included:

  • Password-less access to third-party applications such as Check Point SmartDashboard.
  • Enhanced security with built-in replication and an embedded, encrypted, unexposed vault.
  • Seamless integration framework for in-house custom applications to ensure secure access and activity monitoring.
  • Comprehensive user session logs to support forensic investigations and audit requirements.
Benefits

Faster Access, Stronger Security, and Greater Operational Efficiency

IEX successfully streamlined and accelerated login processes across all applications, including HPE 3PAR, without exposing credentials.

Users connected with a single tap, eliminating friction while maintaining strict access controls. This seamless experience improved productivity and allowed the IT team to focus on leveraging technology to enhance IEX’s core mission of delivering an efficient, secure, and transparent energy trading marketplace.
